Things to do at Christmas

Decorate a roomOne way to keep busy and productive is to paint a room in your house. If you give your bedroom or conservatory a new look in time for the new year, you can start January witrh a feeling of starting anew. It's fun and if you are careful and watch enough Home Decorating shows on the TV you will learn how to do this in a very inexpensive way.

The most important thing to do at Christmas is to be generous but within your budget.

Create a financial diary for the season. Decide how much you are prepared to spend over Christmas and… of course… stick to it!

This is a good way to make sure you don't bankrupt yourself. Manage your finances constantly. At the very least, check your balance every two days, and keep that record of all items bought or ordered.

If you are close to maxxed-out on any of your credit cards, you'll need to be extra careful not to kill yourself being too generous. Remember that if any of the people you want to spend money on would rather have a present from you than to know you were financially secure, they probably aren't your friends anyway.

For parents, think about next year. If you go too mad one year, your children will expect the same next year.

Get your children to make cards and presents for their Grandparents, Uncles and the rest of your family. Everyone loves a homemade card.

Watch out for the lure of store cards. They sound attractive but almost invariably come with really high interest rates.

Remember. Christmas is about sharing not spending.
